Is The NRA Al-Qaeda’s Best Friend?

image

In 2011, American-born al-Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn said in a video, “America is absolutely awash with easily obtainable firearms. You can go down to a gun show at the local convention center and come away with a fully automatic assault rifle, without a background check, and most likely without having to show an identification card. So what are you waiting for?”

(Gadahn was incorrect about the fully automatic assault rifle part because they have been banned since the mid 80s).

“But he was correct on the other points: Most states don’t require background checks for firearms purchased via private sales at gun shows. Most states don’t require showing ID to purchase a firearm from a private seller. Indeed, federal law allows people on terror watch lists to purchase guns, and thousands of them have done so.” (Washington Post)

Those opposed to banning assault rifles often state that they are rarely used in most shootings, but that misses the larger point that when they are used, they cause a greater amount of casualties in a shorter period if time.

Here are some facts:

In the 8 high profile mass public shootings in the US since last July, 7 involved assault weapons (Mother Jones). In other words, almost 90% of the the most recent mass shootings involved an assault weapon!

Of the 10 mass shooting incidents in the US with the highest number of casualties (killed and wounded), 7 involved the use of an assault-style rifle (Mother Jones). That is 70%!

Assault-style rifles have been used in 14 public mass shootings over the last decade. 1/2 of those shootings have occurred since last June. In other words, assault rifles are increasingly becoming the weapon of choice for mass shooters.

The NRA opposes the assault weapons ban and when it expired in 2004, it lobbied heavily to keep it from being reinstated.

Time and time again, the NRA has used a misrepresentation of the 2nd Amendment to oppose common sense gun legislation, especially stricter laws regarding assault rifles which are easily acquired by those intent on harming American citizens.

Osama bin Laden is laughing in his watery grave.

Forget the lone wolves.

Al-Queda’s greatest ally is the NRA.

355* Prayers – Faith Without Works Is Dead

Still Life OH by KMLSI pray too.

Daily. For the victims. For the responders. For the shooters. For peace. For an end to violence. For our broken society. For all of us.

wpid-crime-scene-by-kmls.jpg.jpegBut I also work. Daily. For peace. I write. Every day. This blog is filled with my attempts to point to another way. I create. I dream up alternatives. I vote. I support those on the front lines of peace and advocacy. I try to live gently.

I too believe in the power of prayer. But I am also open to the call. That I may be the answer to a prayer. Part of prayer is an openness to act.

wpid-working-man-hands-by-kmls.jpg.jpegSo act.

You in positions of power, use your power and the responsibility bestowed upon you to make the changes needed to help heal our land. This is not about personal security. It is about communal safety. You have an obligation to protect ALL of your constituency.

crime scene by kmlsTHIS is NOT what the Founders envisioned. Citizens using assault weapons on each other. Haphazard controls. Minimalistic background checks. Loopholes as big as the exit wound from an explosive round.

Faith without works is dead, like more bloody victims lying in the street. It makes the motto on our coinage a farce.

It should read, “In Guns We Trust.”
