Blast from the Past – When Pigs Fly with the 77s

A Midweek Essay

Imagine my excitement when, during a recent trip to the thrift store, I discovered two dear friends who had a significant impact on my early journey as a Christian.

I found two CDs from the 77s and the Swine Flew CD by One Bad Pig.

So needless to say I have been driving around with the windows rolled down during the coldest days of this winter, the stereo as loud as it can go, blasting warm music to the world, singing and laughing with joy, and rediscovering what it meant to be young and in love with Jesus.

The song God Sends Quail by the 77s has been particularly meaningful to me this week. The lyrics are below:

You fail
You try half-hearted and fail
One foot drags behind you
One foot tripping in front of you
You fail
You spit out manna, God sends quail
Dry bones pile up behind you
More wet mirages in front of you
You can’t go back
You can’t go back
You failed
You sunk like Jonah to the whale
Big mouths follow behind you
Still small voice swallowed up by you
You failed
You picked the right time to fail
Got your past behind you
Got your future in front of you
You can’t go back
You can go on
You failed
You picked the right time to fail
Got your past behind you
Got your future in front of you
You can’t go back
You can go on
You can’t go back
You can go on
You can’t go back
You can go on

Indeed.

You can’t go back. But ….

You can go on.
