Magic

on the island
my magic with
creatures did
not seem to
work

the bioluminescent
lagoon remained dark
regardless how much
i swirled my long
white pole in the
rain strewn water

no matter how many
habichuelas i ate
i could not mask
my gringo scent
the dog at
la pared rose up
to snap at me

on the road
to the kioskos
the black turtle
slipped beneath
the road before
she could catch it

in humacao
the iquanas
ran before us
to hide in the palm
shadows near
the lagoon

the fish in
the reef off
playa azul
blurred by
my poor vision
stayed just
out of reach
and clear
sight

and yet
i remember
many
magical
moments
bright like
the stars
above the
lighthouse
near
fajardo

a giant
frog snuggles
against
her warmth
on the
road to
solimar

tiny crabs
no bigger
than my
fingernail
scurry
along the edge
of the
lagoon
in the
reserva
natural

a dog
frolics
in the
sunset surf
off
playa
luquillo

at night
on a quiet beach
in las cabezas
she reaches
into the sand
opens her hand
to reveal
a tiny blue
glowing star
