Mortality

Approaching a freshly-mowed field, I find it covered with a dark low-lying fog of starlings seeking loosened seeds among the grass.

I look away and when my gaze returns, they are gone, flown away on silent wings and I am left alone in an abandoned meadow pondering how long it will be after I have left until the birds return to feed.
